Things to keep in mind when buying a book
- What age are you buying for?
- What level of reading are they at? Get books that are at the level they are at or under. Giving children books that are too hard to read creates frustration and they will not find the love in reading and not want to read that book.
- Does the child like to look at pictures or are they more into the writing? Pictures can help a child to read by giving them clues on what is in the story and more boys love pictures. Illustrations can also make a book more exciting or a keepsake for years to come.
- What type of book do you prefer? Hardcovers last longer and are a nice gift to give. Paperbacks weigh less and cost less so you may be able to buy more. Board books are thicker and more durable for the young ones.
- What category of books do they like (e.g. comedy, drama, fantasy, etc.)? Fiction or Non-fiction - boys tend to like non-fiction more. Don't forget about sticker, colouring or activity books.
- Do they already read a series that they like and would like to add on?
- What are their interests or hobbies?
- Do you remember a book that you loved as a child?? Maybe that publication is still available and you can pass your favourite stories on to the next generation!
- What is your budget? Stick to it!
- Ask the sales staff for suggestions or ask kids of that age for for their suggestions.
